Overeating, Politics, and World News

Overeating related to political and world events is a result of suppressing our emotions about those political or world events.

What deep emotions are being triggered in us?

Many people compulsively eat and eat junk food around times that are politically charged, or when other tragic or unjust events happen in the world.

We have to see that the cause of this kind of emotional eating is the same as the emotional eating you might do after a fight with your spouse.

Overeating related to political or world events is a result of suppressing emotions.

What emotions are coming up for you? Here are some potentials:

Anger

Rage

Hopelessness

Fear

Terror

Unsafe

Sadness

Injustice

Powerlessness

Superiority

Inferiority

Entitlement

Judgement

Out of control

… and more

Instead of eating to suppress these feelings, you need to feel them properly. Go scream and lose your s*** into a pillow, or sob into it, or let yourself shake and tremor in your fear.

Something that is vital to understand about this is that our big emotions that are triggered in these kinds of situations link back to our childhood and are personal.

You may need to simply feel afraid for yourself, feel sad about the state of the world, feel angry about the injustices.

There also may be emotions from your own childhood that are actually getting triggered.

What about hopelessness that links back to your childhood? What might the terror in you link back to in your childhood?

What has set you up for feeling judgmental, or superior, or inferior in certain situations?

What was your experience with the authority figures in your childhood (your parents) and how you feel about authority and government now?

These are just some examples of questions you could ask yourself.

The collateral damage of weight gain or health issues is not an inevitability even in these kinds of circumstances.

Don't "take care of yourself" with junk food and overeating and skipping exercise. Rather, have self-care in the true sense, which is all about staying connected to and feeling your emotions.

We have an opportunity to release suppressed and painful emotions from our soul.

Take this opportunity for your physical health's sake, but most of all for your soul's sake.
